It's Not H

So Charlotte saw a deck of playing cards and asked what they were. So I told her they were playing cards, and then of course because I said "playing" she wanted to play with them. OK, I thought, surely she could handle Go Fish. So I gave a quick lesson on the game and realized I needed to give her a lesson on what a number looks like (she can count, but doesn't recognize numbers yet.) So, we start playing with cards 2-5 to make it easier and I showed her how to count the shapes on her cards to match what the number was in the corner. So, she has her cards in her hand, and I'd point to a number and she would say H. "No, Charlotte, H is a letter, this is a number, let's count." And this little dialogue would go on for each turn she had. "No, Charlotte H is a letter, this is a number, let's count." So then I ask her again what one of the numbers is on her card and she looks at me, and says, "It's not H." True, so true. (It was a two by the way, which she did say!)

Ouch!

Charlotte had a run in with the pavement yesterday, poor girl! She actually handled it like a champ, because after she fell she laid there for a tad bit (she was down the block) and before I could even reach her, she was up and running again (away from me-but only cause she was running after a friend). So, I stopped worrying about her. However, then it must of hit her all of a sudden that she was hurt, because she stopped running and turned toward me, and that's when I saw red all over her face. She started running toward me, all teary eyed. (And of course I was running toward her.) It wasn't bleeding, but just a bad scrape. At first I thought it was like a bug bite, or a rash. (I know strange, considering I knew she fell, but I guess I thought her FACE wouldn't have hit the pavement.)

You would think that it would look better today, being the day after her injury, but it actually looks worse, with her eye bruising a bit. And when we were out today at the grocery store EVERYONE commented on it. Charlotte's tough though. I don't even think she realizes she's hurt until she looks in the mirror.

March Came In Like A Lamb

Yesterday was a gorgeous day in Chicago! No winter jackets, hats or mittens for us (and in the afternoon jackets were able to be shed completely.)

Between necessary appointments we headed to the park for some fresh air and for Eli's first opportunity to go in a playground swing. (he was not overly enthusiastic though!)

In case you're wondering...

...the worst sound in the world* is of a cat throwing up a big, ole hairball especially in the middle of the night when you have to rush to prevent throw up from being on your bed, couch, or carpet!

Thanks, Mom!

As a person who studied psychology in college, I understand nature vs. nurture. No surprise when both Charlotte and Elijah took up thumb sucking considering both Greg and I sucked our thumbs when we were little. However, I was quite surprised when Charlotte cried out today saying she hurt herself, and upon furthering questioning, discovered that she hurt her finger. And what I saw when she told me she hurt her finger was a fingernail in the other hand and a very little stub of a nail left of her hurt finger. Now, where, oh where, did she pick up this nasty habit of biting her fingernails down to the stub? Yup, my mother, Charlotte's maternal grandma.

You need to understand though that my mom no longer bites her nails, and has beautiful fingernails, but there was a time long ago that wasn't the case. (She either almost got blood poisoning or did get blood poisoning.) Let's hope it doesn't get to that. This is now where nurture comes in and we have to teach Charlotte not to bite her nails.

Adorable

These pics were taken on Sunday when Eli decided to have a super short nap, and Charlotte was still sleeping. I figured he has been shafted far too much being the second child, so I pulled out our little Olympus to take lots of random shots of him. These are the best three. Imagine the damage I could do with a super big digital SLR (hint, hint, hint to my family for a birthday present this year!)
